About the Australian Citizenship Test
The Australian citizenship test is a mandatory requirement for most applicants seeking citizenship by conferral. It is a computer-based test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 45 minutes. To pass, you must answer at least 15 questions correctly, a 75% pass mark. You can afford to get no more than five questions wrong.
There is an important additional requirement: the test includes 5 questions specifically about Australian values, and all five must be answered correctly. Getting even one values question wrong results in a fail, regardless of your overall score. This is sometimes called the auto-fail section, and it is the most common reason candidates do not pass on their first attempt.
Every question is drawn from the official resource, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, published by the Department of Home Affairs. No outside knowledge is required.
The test covers five main topic areas:
- Australian values and principles. The core values including rule of law, parliamentary democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equality of men and women, and rejection of violence. All five values questions must be answered correctly.
- History. Australia's Indigenous heritage, British settlement, federation, and the key events that shaped the modern nation.
- Traditions and culture. National symbols, public holidays, sport, and the Australian way of life.
- Government and law. How Australia is governed, the role of Parliament, the legal system, and democratic processes.
- Rights and responsibilities. The rights and responsibilities of citizens and permanent residents living in Australia.
Before you can sit the test, you must meet the residency requirements for citizenship by conferral. These include four years of lawful residency in Australia immediately before applying, at least 12 of those months as a permanent resident, total absences of no more than 12 months across the four years, and absences of no more than 90 days in the final 12 months.
The Citizenship Australia app is built directly from Our Common Bond. The study guide, flashcards, practice tests, and analytics all reflect the actual test content, with particular emphasis on the values section where preparation needs to go beyond simple memorisation.
Common Questions About the Test
Everything you need to know before booking and sitting the Australian citizenship test.
Who needs to take the Australian citizenship test?
Most applicants for citizenship by conferral aged 18 to 59 must pass the test. Applicants aged 60 and over are exempt. Applicants with a permanent incapacity that prevents them from sitting the test may also be exempt. Children under 16 are generally included in a parent's application and do not sit the test independently.
How many questions are in the test and what is the pass mark?
The test has 20 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. You must answer at least 15 correctly, a 75% pass mark. You can afford to get no more than five questions wrong overall. However, all 5 Australian values questions must be answered correctly regardless of your total score. Getting even one values question wrong is an automatic fail.
What is the auto-fail section?
Five questions in the test focus specifically on Australian values. These must all be answered correctly to pass. Missing even one values question means you fail the entire test, even if you would otherwise have enough correct answers to reach 75%. The values tested include rule of law, parliamentary democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equality, mutual respect, and rejection of violence.
What study material should I use?
The only authoritative source is Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, published by the Department of Home Affairs. Every question is drawn from this booklet and no outside knowledge is required. Pay particular attention to the values section, as those questions test applied understanding, not just definitions. The Citizenship Australia app is built directly from this resource.
What are the residency requirements for citizenship?
You must have been lawfully resident in Australia for four years immediately before applying, with at least the final 12 months as a permanent resident. You must not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in total across those four years, and no more than 90 days in the final 12 months. Time on temporary visas counts toward the four years but not toward the 12-month permanent residency requirement.
What happens if I fail the test?
You can retake the test. There is no mandatory waiting period between attempts and resitting is free as part of your application. Before retaking, identify your weak areas through practice testing. If the values section caused the failure, your preparation needs to include scenario-based questions, not just memorising definitions, as the test assesses how values apply in practice.
How long does citizenship processing take after the test?
Processing times vary and the Department of Home Affairs publishes current estimates on its website. After lodging your application and passing the test, you will receive an invitation to a citizenship ceremony where you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge. The ceremony is the final step before citizenship is formally conferred.
How long should I spend preparing?
Most applicants need two to four weeks of structured preparation. Read Our Common Bond thoroughly at least twice, paying extra attention to the values section. Supplement your reading with practice tests to identify gaps. The values section requires understanding how each value applies in real scenarios, not just knowing the definitions. Citizenship Australia's analytics show exactly where your preparation needs more focus.
