ABOUT THE TEST
Everything you need to know before you book
The Life in the UK test is a mandatory requirement for anyone applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship. It is a computer-based test consisting of 24 multiple-choice questions, which must be completed within 45 minutes. To pass, you need to answer at least 18 questions correctly, a 75% pass mark. You can afford to get no more than six questions wrong.
Every question is drawn exclusively from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd Edition). There are no trick questions and no outside knowledge required. Everything you need to know is contained within that single book.
The test covers five main topic areas:
- British values and principles. The values that define what it means to be British, including democracy, the rule of law, and individual liberty.
- A long and illustrious history. British history from the Stone Age to the modern era, including key monarchs, wars, and social movements.
- A modern, thriving society. Culture, traditions, sport, the arts, and national celebrations.
- Government and the law. How the UK is governed, the role of Parliament, and the legal system.
- Everyday life. Practical information about living and working in the UK.
The test costs £50 per attempt and is taken at an approved test centre. The first-attempt pass rate is approximately 68.5%, meaning roughly one in three candidates needs to retake it. Thorough, structured preparation significantly reduces that risk.
Candidates who fail can rebook immediately, with no waiting period or limit on the number of attempts. Your pass certificate, once earned, is valid indefinitely. It does not expire, regardless of how many years pass before you submit your ILR or citizenship application.
ExamReady is built around the official handbook. The question bank, study guide, flashcards, and audiobook all draw directly from the same source material the test is based on.
FAQ
Common Questions About the Test
Everything you need to know before booking and sitting the Life in the UK test.
Who needs to take the Life in the UK test?
Anyone aged 18 to 64 applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship must pass the test. There are exemptions for applicants aged 65 and over, and for those with long-term physical or mental conditions that prevent them from studying or sitting a test. Nationality does not affect the requirement.
How many questions are in the test and what is the pass mark?
The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions, completed within 45 minutes. You must answer at least 18 correctly to pass, which is a 75% pass mark. You can afford to get no more than 6 questions wrong. Results are given immediately at the test centre.
How much does the Life in the UK test cost?
Each attempt costs £50. This fee is non-refundable if you fail or do not attend. There is no limit to how many times you can take the test and no mandatory waiting period between attempts. You can rebook immediately after a failed sitting.
Where do I book the test?
The test must be booked through the official government website at gov.uk. You will need to create an account, select a test centre, choose a date and time, and pay the £50 fee. Test centres are located across the UK. Bring the same ID document you registered with, as a mismatch at the test centre can result in being turned away and losing your fee.
Does the Life in the UK test result expire?
No. Your pass certificate does not expire. Unlike English language test certificates, which are typically valid for two to three years, your Life in the UK test pass is valid indefinitely. You can use it for any future ILR or citizenship application regardless of how much time has passed. Keep your Pass Notification Letter safe as it may be required as evidence.
What happens if I fail the test?
Approximately one in three candidates does not pass on the first attempt. If you fail, you can rebook immediately with no cooling-off period. Your result letter will not detail which questions you got wrong. The most effective retake strategy is to identify weaker topic areas through practice testing and focus your revision there. Most candidates who fail do so on the history chapter, which is the most content-heavy section of the handbook.
What study material should I use?
The only authoritative source is the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd Edition). Every question in the test is drawn from this book and no outside knowledge is required. Unofficial guides can contain errors or outdated information. ExamReady's study guide, audiobook, flashcards, and question bank are all built directly from the official handbook.
How long should I spend preparing?
Most candidates spend between two and eight weeks preparing, depending on their familiarity with British history and culture. A structured approach, reading the handbook at least twice, using flashcards for active recall, and taking regular practice tests, is more effective than longer but passive study. ExamReady's analytics show you exactly which chapters need more attention.
