Built for Gold

Beth Tan wins national gold with the best lift of her career. By morning, millions of people know her face, and far too many of them have opinions about her body, her competition singlet, her ethnicity and why a woman who looks that good should be lifting that much weight. Beth can handle strangers. The harder part is what comes next. Beauty campaigns pay more than medals ever have, modelling days are genuinely fun, and brands suddenly see the 19-year-old weightlifter as something much bigger than sport. Even her parents start wondering whether fame might offer the safer future. Jamie, her long-term boyfriend, is one of the few people who still treats her like Beth. But as shoots stretch late, training starts to suffer and one enormous sponsorship offer arrives with a price hidden behind the money: the brand wants her time when competition needs it most. Beth wanted international gold. Now everyone else has a different idea of what she should become, and the most tempting version could be the one that takes her furthest from the platform.
